A Brief History of the Westin Poinsett
The Westin was built in 1924 after being on South Main Street for over one hundred years. After the Great Depression, it started to get a lot of traction from local residents and quickly became known as “Carolina’s Finest.” By the mid 1950s, the motel industry boomed and made city hotels obsolete, causing the hotel to be foreclosed from 1971 to 1986. It was purchased in 1997 and the extensive renovation process began, transforming it from one of the most endangered historic sites in South Carolina to the same flamboyant hotel that hosted guests such as Amelia Earhart and Bobby Kennedy.
